About ‘keep MAC alive!’

Neither this site nor “An Open Letter to Miami Art Museum” are the product of, or affiliated with, Miami Art Central.

The goal of ‘keep MAC alive!’ and “An Open Letter to Miami Art Museum” is to ensure that the outstanding exhibitions and programming developed at Miami Art Central (MAC) over the past three years not be compromised under the merger of MAC with Miami Art Museum (MAM) and to encourage MAM to continue and foster MAC’s legacy under this new arrangement. The “Open Letter” grew out of a discussion that took place in the context of a panel called “Conversations with Miami,” held February 1st at Locust Projects and organized in conjunction with The Moore Space.

Following the revelation by an audience member that MAC was closing its doors in April and that the fate of scheduled exhibitions and related programming was unclear, suggestions were made that letters expressing concern be sent to MAM Director Terence Riley, the MAM Board of Directors and the media, and the idea of an “open” letter was born. This letter has now been signed by nearly 200 individuals — artists, curators, collectors, critics, architects, designers and others involved in Miami’s arts community — and the text and signatures appear openly on this site.

‘keep MAC alive!’ has no official spokesperson. This site is administered by Michael Tangeman, a media relations strategist who has provided his professional services pro bono in support of this effort.
